Recycled Roof

Our Bronco needs some engine work done and a gantry to possibly lift the engine out. We do not have a shop built yet, only a 20′ Connex metal cargo container.

We have some used guard rail from a highway job, some huge wooden power poles from another job and steel pipe from football field goal posts from another job.

These were benefits of working construction and just had to be hauled home or they would have been scrapped.

We dug holes 3.5′ deep for each support and winched the cut poles into place (very heavy). Got them back filled nice and level.

We then attached a treated 4″x4″ beam to the top of the Connex and placed an 8″x8″ railroad tie above the 3″ steel cross member that will be used as a gantry.

Each of the galvanized metal guard rail pieces are very heavy, (approximately #10 per linear foot) and they are almost 14′ long.

Once we got these into place they are anchored to the wood beams with lag screws and then we used roofing tar to seal the cracks between the pieces.

It is very heavy-duty, overkill by most people’s definition; however, it was basically free and not being used.

This works great for a little shade, shelter and heavy-duty lifting point.

I continue to see value in re-purposing materials and being a (pack-rat) Ha ha!
